The story of Zenith began around 150 years ago when Georges Favre-Jacot, a watch fanatic and innovator, settled in Le Locle, the historical center for Swiss watchmaking; successfully establishing a watchmaking industry. It was the founder’s ambition to create authentic, precision watches; Favre-Jacot was the first artisan in watchmaking who gathered all aspects of watchmaking under one roof.
Currently, Zenith is one of the rare watchmakers manufacturing its pieces totally in-house. His technological expertise combined with the outstanding skill of his craftsmen resulted in the fulfillment of his life’s ambition. Thus laying the foundation for the formation of the Zenith house.
In 1899, Georges Faver-Jacot launched the brand’s first pocket chronograph. He went on to further create various other chronometers, pendulums, chronographs, etc. It did not take long for the brand to acquire fame and win awards; winning a total of 2,333 awards in chronometry.
In 1911, Georges Favre-Jacot handed over control of the company to his nephew James Favre who changed the company’s name to Zenith. The name was chosen to portray the highest point in the sky within reach of a heavenly body; emphasizing the heights of excellence that the brand has aspired to acquire ever since its establishment.
The brand continues to maintain its designing of wristwatches, pocket watches, and other instruments essential for navigation. In 1969, the serial chronograph, known as the El Primero, was manufactured; project-work being conducted for a period of seven years. A total of 300 top artisans were engaged in the development of this outstanding serial chronograph; reputed to be the world’s most accurate. It possesses a rate of 36,000 vibrations per hour, over 600 movement variations (integrated automatic chronograph with a mechanical extra-flat Elite Manual of 225,011,000 lines) as well as over 300 patents; Zenith is a record-holder in the designing of complex watches.
The brand’s adequacy for the skies was clearly manifested in 1970, by strapping an El Primero to the landing equipment of a Boeing 707 flying from Paris to New York. The watch maintained its capability of 36,000 VpH throughout the journey.
