A company by the name of Wilsdorf & Davis was established in 1905, in London. Following a period of 3 years, this same company had its name changed to Rolex; a shorter and easier version to pronounce in any language. In 1919, the company shifted to Geneva, in Switzerland. The brand’s success is largely attributed to the founder’s decision to manufacture wristwatches rather than pocket watches which were in vogue at that time.
In 1926, Rolex launched the “Oyster” model; the watch was both waterproof and dustproof owing to an airtight case with the back, bezel, and crown being screwed to the center of the timepiece. In 1931, the “Perpetual” movement was introduced by the brand; bringing about an automatic winding function instigated by a simple wrist movement. This movement currently exists in all modern automatic watches.
The history of Rolex is strongly related to sports activities; the Cosmograph Daytona was made to meet the precision requirements of professional car drivers; essential for sports car racing. The Yacht-Master II, a regatta chronograph, is the ideal watch for navigators and their demands for perfectly coordinating timings. In 1953, the “Submariner” was launched for the benefit of divers; providing high-quality water resistance up to a depth of 100 meters as well as immersion time readability due to the watch’s rotating bezel. Other models included the Sea Dweller, introduced in 1967, with an immersion resistance of 610 meters underwater. Then came the Deep Sea Special, this was made for experimental purposes; for checking a watch’s resistance strength in very severe conditions, around 10,916 meters below water!
No matter what the consumer requirements are; Rolex watches are superb and highly efficient for everyone. People engaged in all sorts of activities; divers, car drivers, air pilots, land and sea explorers or navigators will find Rolex catering for all their missions. The brand has taken its watchmaking strategies to extremes in ensuring the compatibility of its timepieces to all types of situations.
