The history of the brand can be traced back to 1878 when it was established by a highly talented watchmaker, Gerhard Dietrich Wempe (1857-1921), in Elsfleth near Bremen. Wempe was an ingenious man with a vivid imagination who created top-class watches. He was good at collaborating with prominent Swiss watchmakers, links that paved the way for enhancing the brand’s reputation as a leader in horology.
Gerhard D. Wempe was nicknamed “Gülden Gerd” (Golden Gerd). After a period of 16 years, the company successfully established its second boutique in Oldenburg and another, in 1907, in Hamburg. In 1927, Gerhard Wempe started to sell Patek Philippe models and, in 1953, he was the first German stockist of Rolex watches. Today, in collaboration with leading Swiss manufacturers, the house is engaged in the production of a variety of superior quality watches.
Wempe is renowned for its manufacture of chronometers, calibers, chronographs, a complete calendar, and platinum cases with barrels, and tourbillons…all made in Germany. The brand has recently entered into a collaboration with Rolex. Although Wempe was ambitious to create his own designs, he understood the need for a team of properly trained watchmakers to fulfill his goals. When he died, in 1921, his son, Herbert Wempe, took over control of the company.
The brand is also known for its jewelry creations; the very first brand offering both watches and jewelry in its Hamburg store. Before World War I, the city had 4 Wempe stores. The house’s jewelry creations are famed; being inspired by flora and fauna.
The precious stones used by the brand: diamonds, pearls, rubies, etc, are meticulously carved ensuring all the surfaces are glittering. In addition, materials like gold and silver are crafted finely for acquiring a unique brilliance. It is quite clear that Wempe jewelry collections do not undermine the importance of their aesthetic quality.
Following the death of Gerhard D. Wempe, the brand’s heritage was well looked after by the founder’s descendants. Today, the company is being managed by the family’s fourth generation, under the management of Kim-Eva Wempe, and possess strong worldwide popularity; in famous cities like New York, Vienna, Paris, Madrid, London, and Beijing as well as luxury cruise liners, such as the MS Europa.
