Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) was born in Alsace, France, into a wealthy family of textile manufacturers. Disregarding the wishes of his business class family, he moved to Paris to pursue his artistic ventures. Following the end of the second world war, Schlumberger shifted to New York and, in 1947, together with his partner-jeweler, Nicolas Bongard (a nephew of the renowned fashion designer Paul Poirot) established his own fine jewelry shop.
While Nicolas took charge of business affairs, Schlumberger indulged in designing beautiful jewelry. His fanciful creations of jeweled animals were worn by prominent fashionable women of society like Babe Pauly, Diana Vreeland, and Countess Mona von Bismarck. By 1956, his achievements were so remarkable that Tiffany & Co, a famous jewelry brand, offered Schlumberger and Bongard a place in Tiffany. This move was looked upon as being favorable for both parties. So, Schlumberger and Bongard were given a separate department within Tiffany’s 5th Avenue store together with an impressive supply of precious stones and materials.
Jean Schlumberger is an established French designer, as renowned as Paloma Picasso and Elsa Peretti. Following the end of his working period designing jewelry for the collection of the celebrated dressmaker, Elsa Schiaparelli, his talents were soon recognized as being truly exclusive. He was credited for innovative designs in Tiffany & Co; magnificent ornaments crafted by Schlumberger resulting in his acquiring a client list of the elite class and celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, Jacqueline Kennedy, Babe Paley, Wallis Simpson, and Audrey Hepburn, amongst others.
