The brand’s history can be traced back to 1878, in Kiev, when Joseph Marchak entered the jewelry business as a craftsman. The Marchak House was often called the ‘Cartier of Kiev’. Joseph Marchak, born in 1854, was just 14 years old when he left Ignatovka, his hometown, for Kiev and became an apprentice to a jewelry manufacturer.
After a decade of hard work, he came to the conclusion that he had acquired adequate experience and knowledge to open his own business in 1878. It wasn’t long before his work was recognized all over Russia with the Tsar favoring the brand’s high-end jewelry pieces. Marchak became the royal court’s official jewelry supplier and started to compete with Fabergé.
In 1920, the founder’s son, Alexandre, took over the reins of the business and opened a boutique in Paris at Rue de la Paix. Alexander, having spent a lot of time in Paris, could speak French fluently and easily adjusted to Parisian life. He soon set up the family business at 48, Rue Cambon. He introduced genuine and legendary creations like the “Cocktail ring”; being inspired by Art Deco. In 1925, Marchak won an award at the Arts Déco exhibition. Following the end of the Second World War, the brand acquired worldwide fame under the management of Jacques Verger, Alexandre’s partner, and became the most popular brand name within the United States.
Right from the start, the Marchak brand has been exceptional with its radiant jewelry designs and distinct lines adorned with the most alluring gems: emeralds, rubies, diamonds, turquoises, citrines, and more. Magnificent jewelry in gold, platinum or unusual materials like glass or mink. These wondrous creations have acquired inspiration from natural flora and fauna.
French and American customers were tempted by the brand’s designs and members of royalty were utterly captivated, such as the King of Morocco; His Royal Highness King Hassan II promptly called the head office and placed numerous orders for official gifts. A sparrow-shaped brooch eventually became the brand’s iconic symbol.
The Marchak House continues to entice the world with its radiant and sophisticated high-end pieces of jewelry to this day. The brand’s latest collections are “hommage”, “summer garden” or “legend”; all of which are infused with the Russian spirit.
