The jewelry company Mappin & Webb emerged in Sheffield, in 1775, under the ownership of Jonathan Mappin. The silversmithing workshop’s original name was Mappin Brothers and its aim was to produce the most exquisite silverware pieces to ever exist. In 1860, Mappin & Company was still family-owned and was being run by the founder’s great-grandson, John, who had the business moved to London.
In 1862, John Mappin entered into a collaboration with his brother-in-law, George Webb, resulting in the formation of Mappin, Webb & company. The first of the brand’s store was established at 77-78 Oxford Street, in London. The products on sale – silverware, candlesticks, vanity – were successfully launched.
In 1890, the company was a globally recognized brand, starting with the first overseas boutique being opened in Johannesburg where gold had been discovered in the Witwatersrand area. This was followed by other places in the world, such as Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Rome, Biarritz, Lausanne, Vichy, Bombay, amongst others.
The company makes high-end jewelry not just for British royalty but for customers all over the world. Former clients of the company included the Queen of France, Marie-Antoinette, the Empress of Russia, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Indian Maharajas. In addition, the brand created memorial pieces for the marking of Royal occasions and various other prominent events, like the solo flight from England to Australia of Amy Johnson, in 1930.
In 2012, the company’s head artisan was given the designation of Crown Jeweler by Her Royal Highness the Queen. At present, the brand holds warrants from both the Queen and the Prince of Wales. After being owned by the Asprey Garrard Group, the brand is today under the ownership of the retail group Aurum Holdings Ltd and still creates fine jewelry and collections of silverware.
