Hans Stern was born in Essen, in 1922. He was a German Jew who fled the country as a teenager and was fortunate enough to have acquired sanctuary in Brazil. Once there, he secured a job with a jewelry company, at the young age of 17 years, known as Cristlab, and having a strong passion for precious gems, he eventually moved into the international gem trade. Hans Stern set up his outstanding jewelry house in 1945, in Rio de Janeiro.
Inspired by the experience acquired from his occupation, he embarked on his own venture of discovering beautiful stones and selling them off to tourists. Soon after, he managed to establish his own shop with his first jewelry collections having a comparatively classic design; gaining the attention of notable clientele, such as Fidel Castro and the actress Rita Hayworth; enabling Hans to achieve a certain amount of fame.
Over time, the house began to adapt its designs to meet the bold requirements of a new set of clients. Always remaining true to its foremost objective which was to highlight the prominence of precious and semi-precious gems found within Brazil’s borders. This was at a time when the Latin American market had not been fully acquainted with semi-precious stones like tourmaline, citrine, aquamarine, and amethyst.
