Roman Tirtoff, aka Erté, was a Russian nobleman, born in 1892. He is often referred to as the father of Art Deco. The famous craftsman’s heritage brand is a stunning display of creative reproductions based on his artistic talents.
From his early years, as a young boy, he had a great enthusiasm for Russian and Parisian fashion; a trait he inherited from his mother. He left the country of his birth and moved to Paris at the young age of 15 years, to acquire knowledge on works of artistry.
He started off learning about sculpturing in the Art Nouveau style. A few years later, at the age of 20, he proceeded to further his skills in designing; moving on to creating intriguing stage costumes and various kinds of decorations petitioned by companies and renowned personalities. He was finally on the road to professional fame!
In 1960, Erté became an official sculptor; creating wonders in all sorts of materials, such as aluminum, copper, iron, and even wood. Beautifully painted works of art. Following his successful achievements in various exhibitions, he went on creating platinum-plated bronze sculptures and his very first jewelry pieces. Without abandoning his interests in graphics, sculpturing, art, and decoration, Erté embarked on his new profession as a designer of luxury jewelry in the 1980s. His main passion was that of creating pearl jewelry, his jewelry pieces were received with as much enthusiasm as all his previous works of art. In his book: Art to Wear / The Complete Jewelry, he gives details of his jewelry designs and manufacturing techniques; complete with beautiful colorful illustrations.
Erté’s career lasted for more than 70 years, reaching its peak in the 1920s and ending with his demise in 1990. As the mastermind of Art Deco in the 1920s and 30s, he created outstanding fanciful costumes for famous personalities like Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Anna Pavlova, and Josephine Baker.
