Eugene Blum and Alice Levy, a husband and wife team, founded the Ebel brand out of a mutual love for watch manufacturing. The name “Ebel” was derived from the initials of the couple (Eugene Blum et, meaning and, Levy) with the remarkable watch company being established, in 1911, in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland.
Through the merging of Eugène’s technical expertise and Alice’s design creativity, after one year, Ebel launched its first wristwatch. The brand always had an appreciation for novelty and enhanced quality, resulting in the brand’s welcoming Charles-Eugène Blum into the company, in 1929. He was the founder’s son who contributed to the improvement of the quality and precision of luxury watch manufacturing.
Proceeding with success, in 1935, the Ebel brand became the world’s first user of the “Western Electric” system, an older version of the vibrograph. This paved the way for enhanced accuracy of watch movements. During the second world war, 1939-1945, Ebel provided the British Royal Air Force with watches to assist pilots with their air missions across Europe. In 1964, the brand won the Swiss Premier Prix award for its Lunar Etoile jewelry watch.
The expertise and love for the brand have been handed down from one generation to the other. In 1970, Pierre-Alain Blum, the founder’s grandson, took over and proceeded to successfully acquire a prominent place for the Swiss factory in international luxury. This success was attributed to some watch models, such as the 1977 Sport Classic which was instantly taken up by individuals in the elite sports of tennis, golf, football, and various other sports pursuits. This encouraged the brand to enter into partnership contracts with prominent managers of international sports events.
The Sport Classic is one of the most sought-after luxury watches to this day. In 1985, Ebel launched the Beluga collection, a stunningly graceful collection of watches made specifically for women. This proved to be another global success.
Ebel watches are an acknowledged blend of genuine style and technical expertise. After winning a gold medal on the licensed Ebel Ring watch, at the Swiss National Exhibition in Bern, in 1914, the brand proudly progressed onwards in the 20th century with innovative designs like the Beluga, Onde, and others. It must be remembered that even today, both the Sport Classic and Beluga collections are still favorites together with other more recent designs.
