The 4Cs Guide to Understanding a Diamond's Value

In the world of jewelry, diamonds are distinguished not only by their brilliance, but also by their unique characteristics determined by the "4Cs": Carat, Color, Clarity (Purity), and Cut (Size). Each criterion plays a crucial role in defining a diamond's quality and value, an essential skill for any jewelry connoisseur.

Carat

Weight and impact on price
The "carat" refers to the weight of the diamond. Did you know that one gram is equal to 5 carats? The origin of the term "carat" comes from the carob tree, whose seeds were historically used to measure the weight of diamonds. This measurement has direct implications for price: a 2-carat diamond won't simply cost twice as much as a 1-carat diamond, but much more, due to its increased rarity.

Color

The nuance that defines quality
Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (tinted) depending on their color. Diamonds with color grades D to J are considered the most valuable, with little or no tint discernible to the naked eye. Jewelry set in white gold or platinum accentuates their white brilliance, while yellow gold can intensify warmer tones.

Clarity

Intrinsic purity
A diamond's clarity refers to the inclusions (internal) and imperfections (surface) visible under a 10x magnification loupe. Diamonds without flaws visible to the naked eye are extremely rare and valuable, classified as 'Pure' or 'Flawless'. However, even diamonds with minor inclusions can possess captivating beauty and brilliance.

Cut

More than just a shape
A diamond's cut not only influences its shape but also its ability to reflect light. Cuts are graded from 'poor' to 'excellent'. An ideal cut maximizes the diamond's brilliance and fire. Shapes range from the traditional round (brilliant) to more unique styles like emerald, pear, or marquise, each offering a distinct charm.

At Miller, we understand the importance of these criteria and offer diamonds accompanied by a gemological certificate (GIA, HRD, LFG, etc.), guaranteeing their quality and authenticity.
