IWC, The Origin of a Horological Legend
In 1868, the International Watch Company (IWC) was established in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Founded by Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American engineer and watchmaker, the brand was born from a desire to leverage the skills of Swiss watchmakers while benefiting from favorable production costs. After a tumultuous start, IWC managed to establish a factory capable of producing watches in series, primarily aimed at the American market.
Ten years after its creation, Jones sold the factory to Swiss industrialist Johannes Rauschenbach-Vogel. Upon his death, his son took over the company, and a few years later, IWC innovated with the launch of the first digital watch. Over the decades, the brand has distinguished itself with chronographs featuring major complications and avant-garde creations that combine functionality and elegance.
Watches for a Diverse Clientele
In its early days, IWC specialized in luxury watches for men and women, with models like elegant wristwatches and rectangular timepieces. However, the brand quickly broadened its horizons to more specialized segments, notably aviation and marine.
The first water-resistant watches capable of diving to depths of 300 meters were developed for professional divers, and the iconic 52 T.S.C pilot's watch was born. This timeless design, coupled with innovative mechanisms, appealed to a diverse audience.
